Electronic fuel injection diesel engines, namely electronically controlled fuel injection diesel engines, are an important development direction of modern diesel power systems. Compared with traditional mechanical fuel injection systems, electronic fuel injection systems utilize electronic control units (ECUs) to manage fuel injection volume, injection timing, and injection pressure, and have significant advantages in power response, combustion efficiency, and emission control. However, in actual use, some users have reported that the electronically injected diesel engine has a situation of "high fuel consumption". Such feelings need to be analyzed specifically in combination with the technical characteristics and the usage environment.

The basic principle of the electronic fuel injection system is to monitor the engine's operating status in real time through various sensors (such as water temperature, throttle displacement, rotational speed, intake air volume, etc.), and the ECU automatically calculates the fuel injection strategy based on the collected data to achieve fuel supply as needed. Compared with the constant fuel supply method of mechanical pumps, electronic fuel injection systems have dynamic regulation capabilities and can control fuel usage more reasonably. Theoretically, they should have better fuel economy.

The reason for the impression of "high fuel consumption" often does not stem from the electronic fuel injection structure itself, but is closely related to factors such as usage habits, load conditions, and maintenance status. Under conditions such as high load, frequent acceleration, and prolonged idling, even if the system control is highly accurate, fuel consumption per unit time may still increase. Especially when some users drive in an extreme way or the engine fails to warm up fully, the fuel does not burn completely, and it is naturally difficult to control the fuel consumption at the ideal level.

Electronic fuel injection diesel engine

In addition, electronic fuel injection diesel engines typically adopt high-pressure common rail technology, and the fuel injection pressure is generally above 1000bar, with some systems even exceeding 1800bar. The fuel atomization effect brought by high-pressure injection is good, which can promote more complete combustion, reduce carbon deposits and exhaust emissions. However, high-pressure systems have more stringent requirements for the condition of fuel injectors. If diesel with more impurities is used, the clogging or wear of the fuel injectors will affect the atomization effect of the fuel, thereby causing incomplete combustion and leading to increased fuel consumption. Therefore, the electronic fuel injection system needs to be paired with high-quality fuel and have its filters replaced regularly to maintain a good fuel utilization rate.

It is worth noting that the software calibration strategy of the electronic fuel injection system can also affect the actual fuel consumption performance. Some engines, in order to meet the requirements of low emissions or enhance power response, may set a higher fuel injection rate in certain speed ranges to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. Such a setting may lead to a short-term increase in fuel consumption in heavy-load or frequent start-stop scenarios in urban traffic. However, from the perspective of the overall operation cycle, the reasonably used electronic fuel injection diesel engine still has better fuel control capabilities than the mechanical pump system.

From the perspective of maintenance, it is equally crucial to keep the intake system, fuel injection system and after-treatment system clean. Problems such as intake system blockage, turbocharger failure, and carbon deposits on the valves can all affect the mixture concentration and combustion efficiency, which in turn leads to an increase in fuel injection or abnormally high fuel consumption. Therefore, during the service life of electronic fuel injection diesel engines, regular maintenance, the use of compliant parts and suitable lubricating oil are important guarantees for maintaining low fuel consumption.

Electronically injected diesel engines do not consume more fuel than traditional diesel engines in terms of design logic. On the contrary, they have higher fuel control accuracy and combustion efficiency. The occurrence of high fuel consumption is mostly due to external factors such as the operating environment, operation methods or improper maintenance. The rational use of electronic fuel injection systems, the selection of fuel that meets standards, and the combination of regular inspection and troubleshooting can significantly leverage their fuel economy advantages and reduce long-term usage costs.
